What are the signs of a bad flex pipe in a Ford Fusion?

Got a rattling noise from under my car, and I’m starting to suspect the flex pipe. Does a bad flex pipe make your car sound like it's falling apart, or am I imagining things? Also, is it safe to drive with it like that, or am I one pothole away from a real disaster? Some advice would be much appreciated
