Do I need hub centric rings for aftermarket wheels on my Ford Explorer?

I’ve got some aftermarket wheels, and a buddy told me I might need hub centric rings. Do I really need them for a 2019 Explorer? What happens if I don’t use them – just curious if it's more of a safety thing or just for smooth rides?
